If you are talking to a smart audience, you wouldn't want to use words that a kindergarten would use, but you wouldn't want to use a thesaurus too often and make it sound like you don't know what you are talking about. The same goes for writing/talking to a younger audience; you wouldn't use sophisticated words.
ReplyDeleteWord choice can help your writing sound better. While on the other hand it could completely ruin it. If you use too many big words it make your writing sound really bad but if you use just the right amount it can help your writing a lot. Being aware of your audience is always good too. You don't want to write a j=kindergarten level paper for a lawyer do you? Just like you wouldn't want to write a lawyer level paper for a preschooler. They are one in the same because knowing who your audience is will affect your word choice because otherwise you will be writing "The little dog was brown" for a lawyer or "The petite canine was beige" for a kindergartner. Not a really good idea because the lawyer will look at you like you have the IQ of a box of crayons, while the kindergartner will have no idea what you just said.

If you are talking to a group of adults for an interview you would want to use bigger words so they know to take you seriously and you aren't there for fun and games. Knowing your audience helps determine your word choice.

But on the other hand you wouldn't want to us small basic words if you were writing to a Doctor, Professor, or any other kind of scholar.

You have to change up your words if you are going to be talking to other audiences. If you have an audience with more understanding of larger words, having larger words would be okay. Bigger is not always better. It may not make sense if you have larger words all of the time.

ReplyDeleteI think that if your audience is a group of college students and adults, then it would be a wise decision to use bigger, more sophisticated words not kindergarten words or elementary words. If your audience is a bunch of first graders then using simple words that don't go into much detail will help them understand it more. If they have big words being thrown at them they won't listen because they won't get it. Same for the college students and adults if it is too childish for them they will stop listening and paying attention because they don't want to listen to that.
